I’ve been left in shock, and with this immense whole in my heart over your sudden passing, cousin. My days are so much quieter without our daily messages, checking ins, and laughs.
Thank you for your regular phone calls to your Tädi Mall. I know, you said to stop thanking you “No need for thanks, that’s what family does; that’s what family’s for.” But I am forever grateful.
It pains me that the road ahead will be so much lonelier without your physical presence. But I promise to always remain “the family glue” and continue to love, adore and be proud of my “baby cousins” Sven Jr and Lindsay and watch those grandsons of yours grow and take on the world!
I’m happy you passed with a loving, kind heart next to you, who will watch over and care for your dear Walter so you can rest easier.
May you soar amongst the stars! I’ll be looking up and watching for you.
I love you, cuz. XOXO

Q: How did you meet Sven?
A: After retirement from active duty, I became at DA civilian employee and worked out at Camp MacKall. And that’s how I met Sven. We ragged each other unmercifully, he being a Marine and me being Army Special Forces. We were both transplanted Yankees, he from Maine and me from the Adirondacks. I always enjoyed spending time with Sven, especially weekend get-togethers. He was a hoot to be around and I am honored and privileged to have known him.

We had some wild times my dearest of friends. You were a bright light in a very dark room. Your smile lit up the room. It's going to be hard not being able to call you and talk about the stuff we did since high school. Soar high with the eagles and angels my good friend we will meet again on the other side.

This picture was taken on 9/9/22. Little did I know that this would be the last time I would ever see his smiling face and be able to give him a hug. Our friendship began in Jan 1994. I was a student going through SERE School. Sven made sure he came by to see me while I was a "POW" and say "Hi." Only another instructor could appreciate what that means. But after I graduated, Sven and I became fast friends. He was like a big brother to me, always looking out for me. When I retired from the Navy and he was already at the Army School in Camp MacKall, he called me to say he had given me the highest recommendation. When I got to NC, he had a barbecue at his house and invited other instructors so I could meet some future co-workers and feel welcome. I remember he had a room full of meticulously placed tin boxes and plaques on the wall, tributes to things that were special and important to him. He was always thinking of someone else, so kind and thoughtful, always smiling, and never a bad word to say about anyone. He was also hilarious and loved to joke around. I remember him masterminding many pranks and his laugh was infectious. I am going to miss my dear friend very much. My heart feels a great sense of loss. I know his legacy will live on through his beloved children and grandchildren. I love you, Sven. Rest easy.

I fondly remember sharing a cold beer in the garage of the cottage in Indiana while visiting during a summer vacation. It was "men" only and we would sit for hours just talking among ourselves. Our family would bring some Canadian beer which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Sven would share some stories of his time in the service. We would howl with laughter. Our night time cruises on the lake were filled with joyful banter and fishing became nothing more than an excuse to tell "more stories". One picture I will never forget. Sven dressed in his Marine attire, sword at his side. He was very proud of his time served. Taken way too early from us, he will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. RIP Sven.
