Obituary of Jonathan K. Rice
BATH, Maine – Navy veteran Jonathan Karl Rice, 45, of Bath, died July 21, 2024, in Brunswick, after a long illness.
He was born March 5, 1979, in Gardner, Mass., the son of the late John F. and Lynne Rice. Jonathan grew up in Winchendon, Mass., and graduated from Murdock High School. He moved to Maine when he enlisted in the US Navy, meeting his wife Angèle while stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Jonathan was a US Navy Aviation Machinist's Mate 3rd Class, and Military Police. He later worked on the security team at Bath Iron Works until his retirement at 20 years.
A passionate Boston sports fan, Jonathan shared many games and memorable moments at Fenway Park with his son. In addition to his love of animals, Jon's hobbies included reading, hiking, attending sporting events, and enjoying nature walks with his family. He was a lover of good conversation around a campfire, where he spent many hours with family and friends right up until his last moments.
Well-known for his dedication to his family, his generous spirit, and sharp wit, Jonathan will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him. Those who knew him appreciated his selflessness and ability to bring laughter and joy into their lives. He had the ability to connect with another person's humanity.
Jonathan leaves behind his beloved wife, Angèle Rice, and their son, John Rice, who were the center of his world. He also leaves his siblings, Lindy Rice (Annie), of Kentucky, Dawn Machonis (John), of Massachusetts, and Laura Rice (Norb) of Massachusetts; his uncle Ronald Belair, of Vermont; his father-in-law Wayne and wife Susan Hall, of Florida; his mother-in-law Pat Hall, of Maine; and his sister-in-law Kimberly Dudley and her husband Shane, of Virginia. He also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, including close friends PJ and Stephanie O'Hanlon and Rod Footer.
He was predeceased by his aunt Lois Belair; uncle Ken Rice; maternal grandparents Toivo and Elsa Linden; and paternal grandparents Rupert and Althea Rice.
Per Jonathan’s wishes, there will be no services. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you donate to your local Wildlife Rehabber in Jon’s honor.
