Obituary of Phillip Edward Sargent

Presque Isle, Maine. March 12, 1940 – May 18, 2024

Phillip E. Sargent passed away peacefully at the Aroostook House of Comfort in Presque Isle on May 18, 2024 after a brief illness. He was 84.

Phillip, the son of Percy and Gertrude Sargent grew up in Bridgewater, Maine. During his youth Phillip enjoyed visiting and working at the family-owned Coburn Apple Orchard in Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick. He became very fond of the Coburns and maintained a relationship with the family, especially Donald and Elizabeth. After graduating from the University of Maine in Presque Isle and the University of Southern Maine, Phillip devoted his professional life to education. He taught at the Skyway Middle School in Presque Isle and at the Learning Lab at Northern Maine Community College. He came out of retirement and became an admissions representative for the Maine School of Science and Mathematics. Phillip was a natural at connecting with students at whatever level he taught.

He is predeceased by his wife, Janice; his mother and father, Gertrude and Percy Sargent; and a sister, Patricia Finnemore. He is survived by his son, Johnson and his wife Tracy of Madison, Maine and a grandson, Coburn and his wife Rachelle of Madison, Maine; also by a sister, Jane Anne and her husband Bud McEwan of Presque Isle; and several nieces and nephews. Phillip was a true “son of Aroostook County”. He is well-known for his engaging and humorous storytelling. His repertoire of experiences with numerous friends in the County over the years provided him plenty of material which he was always willing and happy to share. For a number of years, his Christmas tree business, at 25 North Christmas Place in Presque Isle, was a gathering place for his elves, who were affectionately named by his wife Janice. He was a great cribbage player and enjoyed many hours playing with his dad and his large circle of friends. On two occasions, he got the perfect hand which is a very rare occurrence. He spent many years at the family property and camp on Portland Lake in Bridgewater where many stories were told and priceless memories were made with friends and family. Right up to his untimely death, Phillip was looking forward to spending the summer at camp, spending time with his family, listening to Willie Nelson, and taking his almost daily coffee breaks at Tim Horton’s with some very dear old friends.
