David Stanley Campbell

AUGUSTA – David Stanley Campbell, 87, passed away after an extended illness on Sept. 1, 2023. He was at his home with loving family by his side. He was born Nov. 2, 1935, in Weeks Mills, the son of the late Morrill A. and Catherine (Currier) Campbell.

David grew up in Weeks Mills and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1953. He worked at the A and P Grocery Store in Winthrop. His brother Leon persuaded him to join the service and to “make something of himself.” He did that and more.

He joined the U.S Air Force in 1954 and married his first wife Jean Mae Conrad. Together, they went from base to base during his 20 years of service. England, Missouri, Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, and the Philippines. During this time they had four children, April Jane, Jeffrey (Jeffie PooPoo), Stanley (Stan the man) and Sandra Jean (his baby).

While in the service he worked as an Accountant and Auditor and an Information NCO. While stationed in the Philippines, he traveled to Thailand and Vietnam on TDY duty doing audits. While stationed in Florida, he attended and graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park. He retired on May 1, 1974 as Master Sergeant. Then he and Jean settled in Windsor, Maine with their family. He started his second career for the Maine State Government in the Department of Administrative and Financial Services as an Accounting Systems Analyst and then became Director of that department. After a short illness, Jean passed away in March, 1982.

He then became Director of Liquor and Lottery Operations (he called it Bets and Booze). On Sept. 25, 1993 he married Madeline (Maddy) Colby and they joined families. They and their children made up the wedding party and it was a joyous occasion. While serving as Directed they traveled and made many friends, two special ones, Jim and Karen Squeo, from Gaithersburg, Md. Thank you Jim and Karen for your friendship and many kindnesses.

He loved to say “Let’s take a trip,” and off he and Maddy would go with Mike and Julie, Malcom and Beth, Joan and Darrell, Sharon and Bob, or others! They went to Florida 3-4 months in the winter, where they made lots of friends. Dave loved sports of all kinds. He even said he was a ping pong champion! He loved golf and was a great player. He played with Mark Plummer (Maine Amateur Champion) and also Governor John McKernan!. He play many years with special friends, Mike, “Timmy Cup” and Jim. He loved country music and LOVED to sing. His favorite was Conway Twitty “Hello Darlin.” He was a very knowledgeable man. He could talk sports, war, government, politics, and music with the best of them. A very witty man, always quick with a comeback and great sense of humor.

Dave loved his family and Maddy’s family. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for any one of them and loved them one and all.

Dave is survived and remembered with much love by his wife Madeline (Maddy) Campbell. They had 30 beautiful years together. His children April Panosian, Jeffrey Campbell and Sandra Weaver; his sons-in-law, Michael Panosian and Darrin Weaver; his daughters-in-law, Mary-Ann Campbell and Linda Campbell; his grandchildren, Shawn Panosian, Amanda Crommett, Matthew Campbell, Darrin Weaver II, Dakota (Cody) Weaver, Dustin (Dusty) Weaver; his great grandchildren, Neil, Chiran, Raveen, Raena Panosian, Liam and Alyana Crommett, Cohen and Griffen Campbell, Darrin III, Dawson, Dodge, Emma-Lynn, Dallas, Owen, Finley, and Rosealee Weaver; a cousin and his wife, Alden and Donna Cook; and many nephews and nieces.

The word “step family” was not in Dave’s vocabulary. He called his wife’s children and family his own. They are Cindi Colby, Dan Colby and partner Kim St. Amand, Amy weeks, Shawn and Heather Joslyn, Dan Colby Jr, Jamie Colby, Chelsea Colby (his little nurse), Kelsi and Laura Joslyn, Kaylah Beauchamp, Eli Joslyn, Aviana Joslyn and Nora Joslyn; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dianne and Eddie Harrington.

He was predeceased by his first wife Jean (Conrad) Campbell; his son Stanley Campbell on May 18, 2023; his sisters Arlene and Phyllis, his brothers Alden, Richard, Norman (Bobby), Vincent, and Phillip.

All of Dave’s family and friends are invited to a graveside service with military honors in the spring of 2024, when the weather is warm. There will be notice in the Kennebec Journal and Lincoln County News with a date and time.

Lastly, we would like to give many, many thanks to Chaplain Nathan, the nurses and aides of Beacon Hospice, and the aides of Bridges Home Services for the outstanding professional and personal care they gave Dave during the last few weeks, you were something else! The last few years of his life were made more comfortable and enjoyable because of family and friends, here in Maine and New Port Richey Fla., that came to visit, spent time sitting and talking, or simply called to check in. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
