When I was 17, I spent a couple of weeks in Maine with the Black's neighbors, the Babcocks, on Mooselookmeguntic Lake. A handful of us decided to climb the nearby mountain (Bemis). I wasn't raised with hiking or mountain climbing and I couldn't keep up with Verna Black and Sally Babcock, ladies who had to be in their late 40s or early 50s! They were long gone while I stopped to catch my breath and cry.
I always admired Verna for her verve and energy and also her kindness to me. I will always think fondly of her and am sad to know she's no longer with us (except in spirit!). My condolences to the family.
