It was my great privilege to set up a train set at the Farnsworth with Alan for several years. He was such a pleasure to work with! One of my favorite memories was how he referred to everyone as "Love". It has been several years since I last saw him, but I can still hear his kind voice in my head.

We are so sorry we didn't hear about Alan until today. Please accept all our love and best wishes, Ruth, and we hope we see you at the Strand soon. We loved working with Alan, as you know, from the magnificent train in The Thirty-Nine Steps, to the special arrangement and recipe for vomit in God of Carnage, to working with Ken Barnes on some incredible sets. We well remember our first meeting at Zoots, when he regaled us with stories of pub crawls with Ginger Rodgers and said: "Well, I don't know if you are any good, so we'll have to make sure of that before I'll work with you!" Fortunately, the company came up to snuff. And we still have the box of Tony award nominee scripts he gave us - and we produced about five of them! Love, again. Everyman.

Alan mentored me early in my career when I was right out of school and I worked on the Tony Awards for 5 years in the early 90's. He took me under his wing and taught me a lot about working in the theatre. I was a tad bit too eager, and at times could tell I was over the top to him, but loved everything about working with him and hearing his stories. One time, he invited me to his home in Katonah and gave me some of his theatre memorabilia that he said would likely have no value to anyone else-- but it did to me! He gave me a number of bound annotated scripts from his work on Tony Awards from years earlier with a who was who of theater. Even though I am now in my 50's, they have survived many moves over the years and out to Los Angeles. I am so sorry that I did not have the chance to catch up with him in recent years to tell him how much I respected him and learned from him! My condolences to Ruth and the family.

Alan was the PSM on my first Broadway show, Sweenet Todd, in 1979. He was the consummate professional, knowledgeable, unflappable, possessing wisdom and humor in abundance. We bonded. One of my fondest memories is viewing the Macy's Thanksgiving fireworks from the deck of Alan's boat, sitting next to Angela Lansbury. RIP my friend. Victor Amerling

It was such a joy - and an honor - to have Alan Hall as our Stage Manager for the Stephen Sondheim Celebration - BAM Salutes Sondheim. As fellow Brits we shared many jokes in the rehearsal room and on cans during the show... An absolute master of his craft. An absolute gentleman. We were all lucky to know him and to have him briefly as a part of our family... HUGH x

Alan set the standard for excellence in Theatre and humanity. With that magnificent smile, he respected everyone. If you were just taking your first steps in the world of Theatre, he always lent a hand, to help you along. Another light has dimmed on Broadway. Which will be sadly missed.

Absolutely the best! In the Winter before we would attempt Sweeney Todd at Candlewood Playhouse, the dilemma of who to get to direct it loomed large. On a hunch, I called Alan and offered him to come on up. He was delighted at the opportunity, and brought his many tools, personality and desire. As well as making a most memorable show for the many who partook, Alan opened doors for many down the road.
I truly am proud that he picked up my call that day.
Peace to all who read this.

I worked with Alan in the early 1980's on a wonderful off Broadway production of Sweeney Todd. Alan directed the show and he was a pleasure to work with and along side. He and his friend Stephan are back to rehearsing again forever more.

Thank you Alan for setting the standard, raising the bar, and paving the way for so many of us in theatre and in Stage Management. We are cuing the gates open for you.
