Obituary of Shirley M. Mulcahey

SHIRLEY M. MULCAHEY, age 82, passed away on November 26, 2009 at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast with her family by her side. She was a woman of incredible strength who despite struggling with a debilitating illness maintained her sense of humor and never gave up. Born in Hampden, Maine on August 26, 1927 to Roscoe and Mildred Libby, Shirley grew up in Brooks with a brother, Richard and a sister Beverly. She graduated from Morse Memorial High School in Brooks and Husson College in Bangor. Shirley was an athlete excelling at both softball and basketball. While a student at Husson College, she scored 213 points in one season to help her team win 19 of 20 games. In 1990 she was inducted into the Husson College Sports Hall of Fame for her efforts. In 1952 Shirley was married to Dan “Jimmy” Mulcahey of Brooks while he was home on leave from the US Army. Together they set off on a lifelong adventure traveling the country, raising two daughters and enjoying life. Shirley enjoyed softball, golfing, bowling and gardening. But most of all she was a devoted mother who enjoyed spending time with her girls. She was a wonderful cook who made everything from scratch including the best chocolate chip cookies ever. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Dan “Jimmy” Mulcahey of Brooks; two daughters, Jamie Mulcahey of Etna and Dawn Mulcahey and her partner Craig Worthley of Hallowell; a sister, Beverly Stubbs of Belfast; several nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents and brother. The family would like to thank Waldo County Hospice, Kno-Wal-Lin Home Health Care, Brooks Rescue and the staff at Waldo County General Hospital for their compassion and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. At Shirley’s request, there will be no funeral service. A gathering for family and friends will be held Saturday, December 5th at 11 a.m. at the Varney Building in Brooks.Interment will be at the Kenney Cemetery, Brooks, in the spring.
