Obituary of Muriel E. Jacobsen

Muriel E. (Palmeter) Jacobsen, 90, of Back Road, Alfred, Maine passed away peacefully on November 12 with her family by her side. She was born June 2, 1920, at her grandfather's farm in Charlotte, Maine, to Victor and Marjorie (Ayers) Palmeter. As a child she spent many happy hours with her Ayers and Damon cousins at the very farm where she was born. They hayed the fields with the big workhorse "Peggy" and raked blueberries together in her grandfather's blueberry fields. Her grandfather taught her how to fish, and she had a fond memory of catching her first trout with him by her side. While her father worked for Maine Central Railroad she lived in Conway Center NH and Vassalboro ME, but when she was in the 8th grade her family moved to Eastport, Maine and opened V R Palmeter’s clothing store. She lived in Eastport until her graduation from Shead Memorial High School as the class salutatorian in 1938, where she was also the captain of the women's basketball team. She went on to study Nursing at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts where she received her RN Degree. It was while she was working at the hospital that she met Willard T. Jacobsen. They were married on December 22, 1940, and had a long and loving marriage. He, as well as a daughter, Wendy Jacobsen, of North Conway NH, predeceased her. Muriel is survived by her three children, Ronald of Alfred and his wife Charlotte VanJoolen, Carrie Comley of Waterbury Center, VT and her husband Jim, and Cindy Broman of Alfred. She also leaves behind her beloved sister Patricia Whitehead and her husband John of Wilmington, NC, as well as five grandchildren; Robert Volpe of Enid OK, Peter Comley of Seattle WA, Allan Knox of Buxton, ME, Amanda Jacobsen of Kennebunkport ME, Thomas Knox, of Napoleon, OH, and Sara Jacobsen of Stowe, VT, and 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by daughter-in-law Anita Tompkins of Kennebunk, Maine who was always so kind to her, and by Patricia and Marvin Nye, her very best friends, of Alfred, Maine. as well as her thoughtful neighbor, Joanne Croft also of Alfred, Maine and Celeste Fletcher her garden angel from York County Master Gardeners. Muriel was a proud volunteer for the American Red Cross, a member of the Mayflower Society, and a lifelong Red Sox fan. She was an avid reader of historical novels. The books that she was able to borrow from the library added much to her life. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Parsons Memorial Library P O Box 1065 Alfred, ME 04002 We would like to give special thanks to all of Muriel’s caregivers for their genuine caring and compassion. There will be a Memorial Service and bulb planting at "The Farm", as the Jacobsen home in Alfred is lovingly referred to by friends and family on Saturday November 20, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Anyone who would like may bring a bulb to plant in Muriel's memory garden.
