Obituary of Richard Wayne Gay

AUGUSTA -- Richard Wayne Gay, 73, of Augusta passed away after a brief battle with cancer, on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, while at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Brooks on Nov. 18, 1937, the son of Elmer and Nina Gay. He attended Augusta schools before joining and serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He continued his education in the automotive field, working as a service manager for Chrysler for more than 40 years. He was an active member of the community with memberships to Masonic fraternity, a proud member of the Shriners of North America, the American Legion Post 2 in Augusta and the Augusta Elks Lodge. He enjoyed playing bingo, golfing, hunting and dancing. He was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Nina Gay. He is survived by two daughters, JoEllen Scott of Augusta and Linda Viens and her husband, Gerry, of Wyoming, Ohio; two sisters, Norma Loiko of Augusta and Joan Marson of Richmond; three brothers, Robert Gay of Sidney, Ronald Gay of Wisconsin and Reginald Gay Sr. of Windsor; four grandchildren, Nathan and Kristin Scott, and Matthew and Christopher Viens; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A special thanks to the HealthReach and hospice teams, as well as the all those who took care of Dick at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center in Augusta. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Maine Veterans Cemetery Chapel on Mount Vernon Road in Augusta, with a gathering to remember his life to follow at the American Legion Post 2 on Capitol Street Ext., Augusta. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name can be made to the Harold Alfond Center of Cancer Care.
