Obituary of Flora Gidney

Flora Eloise "Cappy" Gidney, 75, died at Veterans Hospice in Augusta on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011. The cause of death was the result of a long bout with cancer. Born Aug. 8, 1936, in East Vassalboro, she attended Erskine Academy in South China. Flora served in the Air Force until 1958, where she excelled in the field of communication center specialist. She lived on both coasts, enjoying her youth in Maine and her career as a senior underwriter for Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. in California.Making the tough decision to leave behind many friends in the early '80s, Flora decided to return to Maine and resume the more laid-back lifestyle of rural living that she enjoyed so much as a young girl. Flora was a past member of the Evening Star Grange located in Washington. An avid reader, she loved to visit the Waldoboro Public Library, pick up the latest Patterson, Childs or Michael Connelly novel and return home and curl up on the couch with her pets and get lost in a mystery. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Nora Gidney, of East Vassalboro; sister Barbara Letourneau of Plainville, Conn.; brothers Donald White and Abbott White, both of North Vassalboro; and several nieces and nephews. Cappy will be sadly missed by dear friends Terry Allen of Pasadena, Calif., Ali Hartwell of Los Angeles, Calif., Cat Harlow of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and April Ciotti of Waldoboro. Flora was predeceased by her daughter, Leah; and several sisters and brothers. Private services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are welcome and should be mailed to Lincoln County Humane Society, 27 Atlantic Ave., Edgecomb, ME 04556. Thanks go to the staff and volunteers at Veterans Hospice for their help and support. Online condolences may be offered at www.directcremationofmaine.com.
