Obituary of Dorothy Robertson

DOROTHY “DOT” LORRAINE (STEIN) ROBERTSON, 92, wife of the late James Wesley Robertson, departed this life October 6, 2011 at her home with her cat, Opal, and her family by her side. Dot was born June 8, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a daughter of Edward and Inga (Oas) Stein. Dot grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Menominee, Wisconsin and in her early 20s traveled to Denver working as a secretary, then to Oakland, California and back to Denver where she met her husband. They were married on April 7, 1945, moving to Maine shortly after marrying. She worked for the Belfast area schools as a secretary to the principal starting at Crosby High School and retiring from Belfast Area High School in 1982 after 25 years of service. It was often said by her husband and others that Dot was more of a Mainer than most Mainers. There were few things Dot disliked about Maine, black flies chief among them. She enjoyed bird watching, spending her summers on Half Moon Pond and crossword puzzles. She was a generous and frequent donor to the ASPCA and local animal shelters. Although she did not have children of her own, she and her husband Jim helped raise her niece Irene and nephews Laverne and Leroy Garton. “Dot and Jim” adored their family, and their endless love and kindness was a constant source of support to every niece and nephew they treated as their own. Dot is survived by her nephew Laverne Garton of Arizona, her niece Irene Smith of Port Charlotte , Florida and Mrs. Jean Garton of Searsport; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, James Wesley Robertson; her sister Marion Garton and her nephews Leroy Garton and Jesse Wing. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 16th at Grove Cemetery, Belfast. Those who wish may make donations in Dot’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association, 383 US Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074. Arrangements under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast. On-line condolences may be offered to the family at www.ripostafh.com
