Obituary of Hazel I. Dunham

HAZEL I. DUNHAM, 83 of Frankfort, passed away at Brewer Rehab on December 4, 2011 after a long series of health issues. Hazel was born January 2, 1928. She married Elmer Smith of Fryeburg in 1945, divorced and then married Burleigh C. Dunham in 1959. Hazel worked at several jobs throughout her lifetime and was a hard worker. She worked at a corn shop in Fryeburg, several years at Penobscot Poultry in Belfast; cleaned hotels, worked in shoe shops and raised chickens on a chicken farm in Winterport. Hazel was known for having a big heart and was willing to share whatever she had with others. She would open her home to people who had no place to live. The family rarely remembers when it was just family living in the home. If you stopped by to visit, you can bet that she would offer you coffee and something to eat. When she cooked a meal, she always cooked extra just in case someone would stop by. In her younger days, you would see her outside digging dandelion greens – oh, how she loved them! She will be missed by many who benefitted from her generosity. She was loved by many and not a bad word could be said about her. She was predeceased by her father, Ernest Quimby of Brownfield and her mother, Gladys; her brothers Gerald and Bobby; sister Audrey; her two previous husbands, Elmer Smith and Burleigh Dunham and son-in-law Everett McIntire. She is survived by her five children, Joyce Levine of Lewiston, Elmer E. Smith Jr. and wife Cynthia of Bangor, Beverly McIntire of Frankfort, Burleigh L. Dunham of Knox, Darlene Ellsworth and husband Ed of Brooks; daughter-in-law Romaine Spaulding, her sister Catherine Eldridge and husband Bill; special granddaughter Meghan Hodgdon and husband Roger of Brooks; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews; a special friend, Doug, who lived with Hazel at her home in Brooks along with many others. Hazel was a wonderful woman who was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by many. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast. On-line condolences may be offered to the family at www.ripostafh.com.
