Obituary of Rebecca Becky Whitney

Rebecca “Becky” Whitney, 58, passed away on January 4, 2012 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta after having fought a near three-year battle with cancer. Becky was born on January 23, 1953 in Augusta, daughter of Esther and Hudson Lemar. Becky was a dedicated worker as she devoted 25 years of service to the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Substance Abuse Services as a Business Manager/Accountant and was recognized by the State as Outstanding in Relations and Services. At 50 years of age, Becky retired from the State of Maine in order to dedicate her time to the support and care of her mother. Becky was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. She took pleasure in traveling with her husband, David, as well as long rides on their motorcycle, and above all, spending time with family. Becky is predeceased by her mother, Esther Lemar, and her father, Hudson Lemar. Becky is survived by her husband, David Whitney of Augusta; her son, Aaron Whitney and his wife, Kate Whitney of Windham; her grandson, Elias Whitney of Windham; her niece, Britany Hustus of Lewiston; her sister, Beverly Lemar of Prosperity, South Carolina; her aunt, Louise Allen of Augusta; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The family is grateful for the loving support and care offered by the staff, nurses and doctors from the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, as well as the Oncology Unit at the Maine General Hospital in Augusta. A special thank you to Dr. Keating and Donna Pit from the Alfond Center for the compassionate care exhibited during the treatment and management of the disease. At Becky’s request, there will be no public viewing or funeral service. A graveside gathering will be held in the spring at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery at 163 Mount Vernon Avenue, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations in Becky’s name may be made to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, 361 Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, Maine, 04330.
