Obituary of Bertha Mildred Cyr

Bertha "Betty" M. Lenfest Elliott Cyr Brunswick - Bertha Cyr, 91, passed into the light on March 7 at Midcoast Senior Heath Center. She was born in Liberty, on March 5, 1921, to Roy and Flora Bell (Bartlett) Lenfest. Her father relocated his family to Bath after the death of her mother. She graduated from Morse High School, Class of 1939. She married Howard E. Elliott in 1940. They lived in Freedom until 1954, when they moved back to Bath. She was a devoted mother to her children, which included a foster daughter and stepson. Howard passed away in 1973. She then married Ivan Cyr in 1975 and was again widowed in 1986. She was faithful to First Baptist Church in Bath, where she was a member of the congregation and Ladies Sewing Circle, generously contributing her time and money in their many fundraisers to help those less fortunate. Together, the Ladies Sewing Circle created beautiful quilts and handmade clothing, which are still treasured by those who were lucky enough to receive them. She worked as a Sales Associate in the Ladies Department at W.T. Grants in Bath and moved with them when they relocated to Cooks Corner. One of her many roles was as a professional bra fitter. She retired from Grand City in Brunswick. She was an excellent seamstress, hand-tailoring clothes for her entire family. She also loved to cook for her family and friends. She made the best dumplings ever! She loved traveling, shopping and dining out. She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara and her husband Bill Angell of Bath and Carolyn and her husband Kevin Harris of West Bath; two sisters, Katherine Rogers and her husband Charlie of Woolwich and Margaret Jones of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Theresa and her husband Lyn Hanna of Woolwich, Beth and her husband ErcanYuken of Kas, Antalya, Turkey, Edward J. Esculano of West Bath, Lisa and her husband Jay Roney of Norfolk MA and Mike Burpee and his wife Norma of Phippsburg; seven great-grandchildren, Crystal and Danielle Esculano, Camellia Hanna, Allison Roney, and Michael, Michaela and Miranda Burpee and two great-great grandchildren, Taylor and Connor Freeman. She has many nieces and nephews, who loved her dearly, as well as her caregiver Heidi Collins of Woolwich, who was by her side until the end. One nephew, Tom Elliott, considered her his “second mom.” She was known as “Nanny” to all of her grandchildren. Her eldest grandchild, Theresa (one of her caregivers), when kissing her goodbye, told her they would meet again in Heaven. Twice-widowed, she was also predeceased by her brothers William and Richard Lenfest, and her baby sister Dora Larrabee. The family would especially like to thank the staff at Merepoint Nursing for the special loving attention and care they gave her during her stay. A Celebration of Life service will be held in Freedom and conducted by Pastor Warren Spaulding in May.
