Obituary of Phyllis Adele Simpson Zucchi

Phyllis Adele Simpson Zucchi, age 89, died peacefully at her home in Waldoboro,Maine on November 30, with her family at her side. She was born June 20, 1923, in Providence, Rhode Island and was the only child of James and Florence Evans Simpson. Phyllis graduated from Lockwood High School in Warwick, Rhode Island, Bryant College and the University of Maine. She was a teacher for many years in Tenant’s Harbor. She was married to William Zucchi for thirty-six years. Bill and Phyllis moved to Waldoboro, Maine in 1948, where they raised three daughters. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Adele Zucchi Ames and her husband, David of Northport, Maine; Barbara Zucchi and her husband Donald Johnston of Jefferson, Maine; Carol Zucchi and her husband, Carl Gushee of Waldoboro, Maine. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Pamela Veilleux and her husband, Leo of Manchester, New Hampshire; Deborah Tukey and her husband, Dave of Gorham, Maine; Darcy Johnston and her husband John Collins of Searsmont, Maine; Erika Johnston and her husband Jason Rich of Waldoboro; Will Gushee and his partner, Darcy Forrest of Tucson, Arizona; Emily McDermott and her husband, Joe of Fort Kent, Maine. Phyllis is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Alyson Veilleux of Manchester, New Hampshire.; Blake Brown of Windham, Maine; Anthony Dugan and Alex Tukey of Gorham, Maine; Elliot and Azalea Rich of Waldoboro, Maine; Stella Collins of Searsmont, Maine; Zappa McDermott of Fort Kent, Maine. She is also survived by two nieces, Jean Hagan of Warwick, Rhode Island; Letty Jo Worrick of Aurora, Colorado; two nephews, Jonathan Zucchi of Narragansett, Rhode Island and Timothy Zucchi of Coventry, Rhode Island. Phyllis loved to play word and card games. Her many bridge friends played with her up until just before she died. They were Jean Begley, Ellie Groth, Cynthia Allen, Paula Titon, Linda Letteney. For that the family is extremely grateful. She also loved to play Scrabble or any other word game. She played every Wednesday afternoon with Ginny Jackson and her mother Virginia “Ma” Jackson along with Fran Williamson. The family would like to thank all of Phyllis’ caregivers; Gloria Luce, Gwen Galucki, Paula Titon, Erika Johnston, Darcy Johnston and Emily McDermott for all the special care and love they gave her. Thank you to family and friends for all the cards and letters that were sent to her during her illness. Nancy Thornley was her ever faithful pen-pal exchanging letters many times a week. These letters and cards meant so much to her. There will be a Celebration of Life for Phyllis on December 15, 2012, at the Methodist Church on Friendship Street in Waldoboro at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jen Curran presiding. Please omit flowers.
