Obituary of Stella Fleming Weiss

BELFAST Stella Fleming Weiss, 80, passed away on March 14, 2013 in Belfast. She was born on September 16, 1932 to Joseph and Mary (Russell) Fleming at New London Hospital, New London, NH. Stella was named for her grandmother, Stella Collins Russell who was a very special person and a great influence in her life. She attended school in Sunapee, NH and Rangeley, Maine graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1950. She entered nursing school in September 1950 at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. After graduation, she returned to New London Hospital where she worked full and part time in all departments until August of 1972 when she and the family moved to Islesboro. She worked at Waldo County General Hospital until 1997 in a variety of positions from night nurse to education and finally to Social Service/Discharge Planning and Utilization Review. After retirement, she was asked by Dr. James Delehanty if she would be interested in working in his office. Starting with a couple of hours two days a week, it soon turned into full-time. She stayed there until 2008 when she retired again. It was a wonderful way to end over 50 years of nursing. Stella loved to read, enjoyed listening to music as well as staying in touch with family and friends which included attending the Deaconess Reunions. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband Kenneth Weiss and a brother James Fleming. Stella is survived by her loving children, Mark Weiss and wife Sharon of Nebraska, Julie Tower and husband Paul of Hampden, Joanne Sprout and husband James of Searsport, Sharon McCorison and husband Calvin of Islesboro, Eric Weiss and wife Emily of Warren; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom she enjoyed very much; three nephews and numerous special friends. A celebration of Stella’s life will be held and announced in the fall. Her ashes will be scattered in her three favorite places – Lake Sunapee, NH, Rangeley Lake and Penobscot Bay.
