Obituary of Florence Flossie Wheeler

FLORENCE “FLOSSIE” INGRAHAM FLYE WHEELER, passed away 4/21/2013 at Augusta. Flossie was born October 27, 1927 the daughter of Coyt and Adelia (Cook) Ingraham. After graduating from Freedom Academy she married Carlton “Nick” Flye. They lived in Oakland where she worked at Diamond International before moving to their farm in Palermo where they raised chickens and worked at the Palermo Consolidated School. She and Nick raised and bred race horses and were members of the Maine Harness Racing Association. Flossie was very involved in Eastern Star and was Past Worthy Matron at Josiah H. Drummond Chapter 91 in Thorndike. She was also Past Master of Dirigo Grange #98 in Freedom and very active at the local and State levels. Flossie was also a president of the Palermo Extension. She attended the Palermo Christian Church and the Knox Ridge Baptist Church. In 1991, after Nick’s death in 1984, she worked at the Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop. In 1992 she married Olive Wheeler. Flossie was predeceased by both of her husbands, her parents and her brother Richard Ingraham. Her hobbies were sewing, cooking, caring for her race horses, recreational camping, square dancing and volunteering her time and energy to the organizations to which she belonged. Survivors include her sister, Mary Thomas and husband Arthur of Mercer, sisters-in-law Amy (McKenney) Ingraham of Knox, Shirley (Flye) Tilton of Sidney, Geraldine (Flye) Walsh and husband Richard of Florida, and Frances (Nelson) Flye Faxon of Palermo as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. The family would like to thank the exceptional staff at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Augusta as well as Beacon Hospice. Donations in memory of Flossie may be made to an organization of charity of your choice. A memorial service will be at a later date. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Freedom.
