Obituary of Marilyn Bess

Marilyn Irene Bess1946 - 2015WALDOBORO - Marilyn Irene Bess, 69, of Waldoboro, died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of March 4, 2015, surrounded by family at her home in Waldoboro. Strong in her faith, she now goes to be with the Lord. Marilyn is survived by her two sisters, Eugenie Sotiropoulos and Beverly Sotiropoulos; husband Frederick Bess; children, Alexander Goode, Helen Bess, and Phillip Bess; and grandson Ian Goode. The daughter of George and Lillian Sotiropoulos, Marilyn Irene Sotiropoulos was born on Feb. 28, 1946, in Haverhill, Mass. She graduated from Haverhill High School in 1964, and later from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a B.A. in art history. Beloved by her students, she worked for decades as a teacher in various positions throughout midcoast Maine. We remember her as a determined, vibrant woman. Unfailingly patient and kind, she encouraged her students, friends, and family to excel at whatever tasks they undertook. Whenever she saw someone in need, she would step in to help. Always a lover of books, she impressed upon us the value and pleasure of reading. She believed life was precious, that we should seize every moment, and that you were never "too old" for something. A graduate of the Master Gardener program here in Maine, Marilyn was well known for the extensive gardens she maintained. She loved animals, and with her husband of 32 years, maintained a working farm for decades simply for the joy of working the land. Never afraid to try new things, she took up horse riding in her 60s, with a bravery and aplomb that amazed onlookers. Funeral services and a reception afterward will be held at the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro on March 14, 2015, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Dwight Dean officiating. All are welcome to attend. The family would like to thank all the friends, caregivers, and doctors who loved and cared for Marilyn these last two years. Funeral services and a reception afterward will be held at the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro on March 14, 2015, at 11 a.m.
