Obituary of Robert Barry Mangion

KITTERY POINT, Maine – Robert B. Mangion passed away at home on Thursday, April 2, 2015, following a long illness. He was 72. Born in Portland, he attended Falmouth schools where in high school he was Pole Vault Champion for the State of Maine. He graduated from Colby College as a major in economics and pitcher for the baseball team, known for his fastball. From boyhood, he was a devoted Red Sox fan and became an expert in all things baseball. Bob’s career was banking, first at Chase Manhattan Bank followed by 20 years at Bank of Boston where he was Vice President and head of Correspondent Portfolio Services, providing investment management for client banks. He was subsequently the Investment Officer for Milford National Bank and performed loan workout for the FDIC. In 1998, he retired to Kittery Point where he volunteered in the community, traveled extensively and enjoyed his 11 grandchildren, to whom he was “Grandbob”. He wrote poetry, much of it inspired by his world travels and his love of Maine. He leaves his wife, Johanna, and five children: Jon Mangion, and his wife, Eleanor, of Clarinbridge, Ireland: Sarah Foxfire and her husband, Yuba, of Fairfax, California; Philip Chase and his wife, Susan, of Newton, Massachusetts; Brooks Chase and his wife, Angela, of Duxbury, Massachusetts; and Almaz Asresahin of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He also leaves eleven grandchildren: Abigail, Amelia, Sam, Ava, Maggie, James, Aliana, Amanuel, Gabrielle, Christian and Mirabel. He will be remembered by his family as a caring and selfless husband, father, and grandfather and by all for his kindness and extraordinary sense of humor. He also leave his sister, Jean Dexter, and her husband, Steve, and his brother-in-law, Rick Barrie and his partner, Sue Moore, as well as many devoted friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his first wife, Gabrielle, and by his son, Joel. Donations in his memory may be made to the Kittery Art Association, 8 Coleman Avenue, Kittery Point, Maine 03905, where he performed years of dedicated service.
