Obituary of Frances Crummett Newell

MONTVILLE FRANCES C. (CRUMMETT) NEWELL, 91 of Montville, passed away on June 28, 2015. She was born March 31, 1924 in Somerville Maine, the daughter of Charles and Lila (French) Crummett. Frances married the love of her life and soul mate, Lewis Newell, on July 3, 1964, and they built a life together on the Newell Family Homestead. She was a member of the Grange moving through the levels of Demeter, Pomona and then State Grange and became a Junior Grange leader in her area. Frances was involved in the AMVETS Food Bank Auxiliary, Eastern Star in Liberty, Montville Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary as well as donating her time leading 4-H and Brownies. She worked in the poultry plants in Belfast, cooked at Whitcomb’s Restaurant as well as a hunting lodge in Appleton. She also started her own restaurant in Montville. Frances drove the sand truck for her son and husband and acted as a local taxi for her friends and family. Her children remember her skill for cooking. At her annual yard sales, her fudge and pies were the first to go. She is predeceased by her spouse; her parents and sons Clifford, Paul and Lawrence Doolan and grandson Cliff Jr. She is survived by her loving children, Charles Doolan and wife Janice of Lynn Haven, Florida, Elizabeth “Sister” Sullivan and husband Jeremiah of Thorndike, Howard Doolan and wife Eva of Belfast, Harry Doolan and wife Louise of Waterville, Nellie “Nel” Littlefield and husband Charles “Kippy” of Morrill, Neil Doolan and wife Alicia Lynette of Montville, June Mattie and husband Joe of Randolph, Kay Noyes and husband Robert of Montville, and Emily-May Hills and husband Maurice “Moe” of Montville; 44 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren and 13 great, great-grandchildren; and special friend Lili O’Neil. Visiting hours will be held on Monday July 6 from 4-6 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7th. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Montville. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Pink Ladies Cancer Survivors Annual Luncheon, c/o Elizabeth Sullivan, 217 Reynolds Road, Thorndike, ME 04986.
