Obituary of Phyllis M. Rideout

PHYLLIS RIDEOUT, 79 of Southwest Harbor, passed away in Bar Harbor on October 14, 2015. She was born in West Haven, CT January 17, 1936 to Norman and Irma (Serensen) Maddern. Since childhood, she had a life-long love of the ocean in all its natural beauty and peacefulness. She returned to it 8 years ago to be closer to her daughter and family. Blossoming in her island community, she made roots in Southwest Harbor. She volunteered twice a week with people afflicted with memory loss, an illness close to her heart. She also gave her time to Meals-For-Me, delivering lunches to residents of Ridge Apartments. Her heart was fullest when she was doing for others. She took great pride in her family near and far. She loved them to pieces as she would always say. She lived selflessly and courageously. Her kind words, bright smiles and homemade cards brought joy to many. Love is what she gave us and what she leaves with us. Phyllis is predeceased by both parents and a brother Norman Maddern Jr. Survivors include her daughter Clarice Evans and husband Frank of Southwest Harbor; long-time companion, Robert Kelley of Palmer, MA; brother Robert Maddern and wife Joan of Port Orange, FL; grandchildren Danielle Bartlett of Windham, ME and Courtney Bartlett of Portland, ME; seven loving nephews and a niece; former son-in-law Dan Bartlett; sister-at-heart Sharon Dagnello and life-long friends Judith and John Bartlett. Celebration of Life will be held at 4 p.m. October 30th at Tremont Congregational Church with Rev. Wayne Buchanan officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Phyllis to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St., Suite 304, Chicago, IL 60611 or to Friends of Acadia, PO Box 45, Bar Harbor, ME 04609 or Westside Food Pantry, PO Box 767, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
