Obituary of Helen B. Boynton

Helen Bridge Boynton 9/11/1928 – 10/1/2018. Helen Bridge Boynton, formerly of Brunswick, Maine died peacefully on October 1st, 2018 at Hill House in Bath, Maine. She was 90 years old. Born on September 11, 1928 in Clayton, Missouri to George Leighton Bridge and Dorothy Flint Bridge, she had a twin sister Susan, brothers Bud, Eliot & Gardie, and sister Sally. Helen grew up attending The Community School in Clayton, until her family moved to Walpole, New Hampshire, where her father built the family’s farm, ‘Windy Acres’. Helen grew up surrounded by animals and nature in a creative and loving family. She attended The High Mowing School in Wilton, NH where she discovered a passion for art & sculpture. She studied at The Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston and continued her study of sculpture & art history at the Universita di Firenze, Florence, Italy, where she graduated in 1952. Helen married David Parker Boynton on June 27, 1953 in Walpole. They settled in Westport, CT where they raised their 2 children John & Francie. Helen sculpted in her basement studio, volunteered at the Westport Nature Center and was honored for her work with the School Volunteer Association. She was a dedicated blood donor, an avid gardener and enjoyed being an administrative assistant at Save The Children in Westport. She loved skiing, hiking and camping with her family. In 1985 she and Dave retired to Brunswick, Maine where they enjoyed traveling, cycling, hiking and skiing. Helen took up weaving, and worked at her loom for many years. After Dave’s death in 1995, Helen continued her community involvement, volunteering for Hospice, Neighbors, and attending music & lectures at Bowdoin College. In 1999 she met David Stuntz and they became partners in travel, hiking, cycling and life. Helen is survived by her son John Boynton of Brunswick, daughter Francie Ashforth and husband Hank of Ridgefield, CT, grandsons Harry Ashforth, Gardie Ashforth and his wife Alli Ashforth. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces & nephews and her partner David Stuntz. She is predeceased by her siblings, most recently by her twin Susan Bridge Blair, just a few months prior to Helen’s passing. Helen’s family is so grateful for the loving care that Hill House provided her during the past few years. Helen had a great sense of humor, was full of spark and vitality, something her caregivers often commented on. The family is currently making plans for a celebration of Helen’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Helen’s memory to the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, 56 Maine Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011.
