Obituary of Phyllis Virginia Coon

In the early afternoon of August 23, 2018, Phyllis Virginia Coon entered eternity at her home and met Jesus face to face. She was born on May 22, 1927 to Seth E. and Mary E. (Childs) Avery in Eastport, Maine, where she grew up and went to school. She graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1946. In 1948, she married Kenneth S. Mahar and raised her family with him. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She did many things in her life, but her main passion was always her family. In the early years, she worked in the sardine packing industry and later at the local woolen mill in Quoddy Village. After that, she worked for the Hathaway Shirt Company. In 1976, she married Clinton Coon and worked as a CNA and an EMT in the Eastport area. After Clinton's death, she moved to Windsor, Maine with her daughter and son-in-law and then in 1995 moved to Rockland. At that time she became an unplanned full time nanny to several families and continued that work until she was 78. Phyllis had many passions, among them were cake decorating, knitting, crocheting and quilt making. She also loved cooking and would often have her family over for her wonderful dinners. Her kind heart and giving spirit will surely be missed. Today, heaven is a sweeter place with her presence there. Phyllis was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, Clinton Coon; her siblings; Effie Avery, Kenneth Avery, Charles (Winslow) Avery, Hollis Avery, Ray Avery, Seth Avery, Mary E. Pottle, Hannefa Armstrong, and Burton Avery. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Cunningham and her husband, Bill; her son Kenneth Mahar and his wife, Elaine; grandchildren; Barry Cunningham, Jason Cunningham, Joshua Mahar, Amy Eastman and Reuben Mahar. She had seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at Lakeview Presbyterian Church in Rockport, Maine at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 13, with Pastor Steve Cerce officiating and a private burial will be held at a later time.
