Obituary of Myrtie Gilbert

Myrtie Alberta (Hotchkiss) Gilbert, 106, of Caribou and Augusta passed away at a local nursing care facility on Saturday, February 10, 2018. She was born in Medford, Massachusetts, September 2, 1911, the daughter of Benjamin A. Hotchkiss and Ella Lillian Dockham. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Laurence Gilbert, step father Walter C. Smith; brother Herbert Craig Hotchkiss, sister Nancy McGuire, brothers Howard E. Smith and Robert A. Smith; step brother Charles Wellington Smith and step sisters Beverly B. Hayes and Dorothy Larrabee. She is survived by many nieces and nephews who live in Maine and California, her friend and touring companion Barbara Pendleton of Islesboro and her sister-in-law Betty Gilbert of Manchester. Alberta made friends wherever she went and had a quick sense of humor. She was employed many years as a bookbinder at the Kennebec Journal and as a homemaker for an Augusta family. If a car was going to be on the road, she wanted to be in it. Graveside services will be held on June 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery 281 Civic Center Drive in Augusta with her nephew, the Rev. Robert A. Smith, Jr., presiding.
