Obituary of Maynard W. Overlock

Maynard W. Overlock, age 72 Maynard Warren Overlock passed away peacefully at his home in Bath, Maine on July 1, 2017, at the age of 72 after battling cancer. Maynard is predeceased by his mother and father, Charles Lee Overlock and Rella Auralie Dube Overlock, a step mother, Kathleen Overlock, 4 step brothers Edward, Arthur, Cleveland, Charles Ashton and a step sister, Roxanne Ashton. Maynard is survived by 4 sisters: Gloria Gustafson and her husband, Paul Gustafson of York, ME; Carol Guertin and her husband, George Guertin, Jr. of Holden, MA; Diane Overlock of Cleveland, OH, and Janet Tucker and her husband Bruce of Rochester, NH. 3 brothers: Earl and his wife Beverly, and Carl and his wife Louise both of Wiscassett, ME, and Lawrence and his wife Patricia of Stuart, FL. 1 step brother, Marc Ashton of Wiscassett, ME. Maynard was born and raised in Bath, ME. He graduated from Morse High School in 1963 and received his Associates degree from the University of Southern Maine two years later, then he joined the Army. Maynard survived his stint in Viet Nam and upon completion of his service to his country he returned to the University of Southern Maine and received his Bachelors of Science degree in business. Maynard started his professional career working for Valley’s Steak House starting as a manager trainee learning all of the jobs in the restaurant and quickly came up through the ranks to become a Regional District Manager and after 10 years decided to give up the corporate life to become a commercial fisherman with his step brother Charlie. When the fishing industry became unstable Maynard changed professions and went to work for Bath Iron Works. He retired in 2009 after 20 years of service. Maynard was an avid sportsman who lived to hunt and fish. If anyone wanted to go hunting (bird, duck, deer, Moose, etc.) or fishing (lake or ocean) he was ready. He loved going to camp with his friends and cousins and winning at poker! Maynard was a loyal New England sports fan. He loved betting on all his teams (Pat’s, Celtics, Red Sox, etc.) with his brother Larry and although the bets were small, he won most of the time and made his brother pay up. Maynard was a master cribbage player and he could not wait to teach all of his many nieces and nephews. He never gave them a break so when they finally beat him, they were all so proud. A special thank you to Rusty Guertin and Bev Overlock who were his angels, Jack and Sue who were the best of neighbors and helped Maynard, Anne Carter (friend and his personal assistant), Gibb and Jane Gower (driver and friends), Butch who drove all the way to Cleveland and back, and all of his wonderful friends that came to visit and/or sent messages. A celebration of Maynard’s life will be held at the Kennebec Tavern, 119 Commercial St., Bath, ME, on Saturday July 8,2017, from 2 to 4 PM. Please come with your favorite story of Maynard as he loved his friends and family. Maynard was not a fan of flowers or fanfare.
