Obituary of Lanier Campbell Greer

Lanier Campbell “Nick” Greer, 84, passed away at his home in Machiasport, May 21 following a long illness. A resident of Machiasport, Maine since 1977, he was the son of Lanier and Dorothy (nee Campbell) Greer. He grew up in Lynn Massachusetts, Erie Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights Ohio. He received the Bachelor of Architecture degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1955, winning the School Medal of the American Institute of Architects. He earned the Master in City and Regional Planning degree from Harvard University, completing the three year program in two years. He was then conscripted into the U.S. Army for two years active and four years active reserve duty in combat engineer battalions. Greer was a professional Town Planner. He served as Planning Director of the City of Bakersfield California, Executive Director of the Kern County California Council of Governments, Director of Planning for the Boston civil engineering firm Edwards and Kelcey, Bicentennial Projects Planner for the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Executive Director of the Washington County Maine Regional Planning Commission, and Community Development Specialist for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. After retirement from the last of these positions, he worked for several years as an independent Town Planning Consultant. He enjoyed working on, and relaxing at, his home in Machiasport and camp on Lake Cathance with his wife of fifty-two years, the former Cora Coggins. During his retirement he and his wife traveled widely, with a particular fondness for the British Isles and the Caribbean island of Bonaire. He is survived by his wife, son Wendell, his wife Sarah, grandson Nicholas and granddaughter Eleanor, of Camden; son Michael and his wife Christy of Union Maine; retired greyhound, Lexy and cat Bonaire .
