Obituary of David W. Weigel

David W. Weigel, 57, husband of Theresa (Bickford) Weigel and father of Eleanor Springfield and Anna Katharine “Kate” Weigel, passed away on May 8th, in his Blossom Farm home in Penobscot after a long and courageous battle with secondary plasma cell leukemia (advanced bone marrow cancer). David attended the University of Kentucky his first 2 years of college and transferred to the University of Louisville to earn a BA in Mathematics in 1986. Following that, he got on a racing Schwin bicycle with sewed up tires, he called Scarlett, and rode through Canada to Cornish, Maine to visit college friends. It was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen and decided to make Maine his home. David then moved to Harpswell and attended the University of Southern Maine to obtain a teaching certificate. He then met Dianna Benner from Brewer whom he married in 1988. They share a daughter, Kate, born in 1992. David started his own business, Y Gulls Gardens, a full service landscaping company, in 1984. He was dedicated to natural rhythmic gardening methods. He was very successful at creating upscale residential landscapes on the Blue Hill Peninsula and especially proud of his work at the former John Paul’s Bistro in downtown Blue Hill. David and his associates have built massive and beautiful granite walls, patios, and gardens that continue to stand the test of time. David believed in creating and building shrines. In 1999, David met Theresa and in August of 2000 they were married and bought the Blossom Farm in Penobscot. Prior to David’s illness, they shared a very special and magical trip to Hawaii in 2015 to visit his older daughter Elly. In 2007, David bicycled from Orlando, FL to Bangor, Maine to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. David enjoyed playing ping pong weekly with his friends. He loved all living things and honored nature. He also enjoyed writing and left behind a book for children of all ages called Castine Halloween. Highly intelligent and with just the right amount of eccentricity, David was a robust, determined, “can do guy” with a colorful and spirited personality. He was very passionate about all that he engaged in; mostly, his love for his family and friends. He was a trusted father, husband, and friend with solid integrity. He believed his life’s purpose was to make the world a better place, “everyday in every way.” David loved intensely and was loved intensely and will be sadly missed. During his long and very difficult battle for his life, he received a very supported and loving send off thanks to all his loving family and friends. Our memories and fun times with David will live in our hearts forever. David was predeceased by his mother Linda (Clark) Weigel of Louisville, KY who passed away in 2015 and his great-grandfather who he called “the old man.” David is survived by his wife, Theresa, brother-in-law Jon Bickford, and Theresa’s family all from the Fairfield area. He is also survived by his daughter Elly Springfield of Hawaii and daughter Kate and her mother Dianna of Brewer. He is also survived by his Weigel family in Louisville, Kentucky: his father Edwin, brother Todd and wife Nancy, brother Keith and wife Laura, nieces Tricia and Alexa, and nephew Jacob; and many close friends that he acknowledged as brothers. A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Blossom Farm on May 27th at 1pm. Feel free to bring a pot luck dish.
