Obituary of John Alfred Clough

Hancock, Maine - John Alfred Clough, 75, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday March 29, 2017 from complications of heart surgery. John was born in Ellsworth, Maine March 7, 1942 the son of Harvard and Minnie (Harriman) Clough. John spent his life in the Ellsworth, Maine area. John was an avid sportsman and many of his family and friends have fond memories of camping and fishing on Square Lake. John was a passionate hunter and outdoorsman in his youth and as he aged his weapon of choice became a camera. He enjoyed exploring nature and capturing the animals on film. John loved the hunting and fishing stories long after his health prevented his active participation. John was a man of many professions working as an accomplished chef, business owner, and his primary passion of law enforcement where he spent over 20 years as a Police Officer and Private Investigator. He also held a third degree black belt in Ju-Jitsu Karate from Tracy’s Karate in Ellsworth. John had a large physical stature which gave him a large presence in life, but his stature was small compared to the size of his heart. John was the first to show up in times of trouble and was always loyal to family and friends. He had an unrivaled sense of humor and enjoyed his family, his home and his beloved dogs. The great love in John’s life was his wife of fifty-two years, Carolyn Hastings Clough. John was predeceased by his parents, Minnie and Harvard Clough, his brothers Mike, Bob, Harold, and Lawrence and his sisters Anne and Hilda. He is survived by his wife, two children, David and Eileen, one brother, Parker, two grandchildren, Jonathan and Michelle, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. John had a special best friend in his nephew, James McDevitt, whose shared love of sports and understanding of physical challenges created a valued bond. A Celebration of Life event will be held at Timberland Acres RV Park, Trenton, Saturday May 27, 2017, 1-3pm. Donations may be made to a SPCA of your choice in his memory.
