Obituary of Hope Iris Chase

Hope Iris Chase, 89, daughter of Harry I. & Letitia F. Shumway, was born in Boston 16 Jan 1928 died 9 Mar 2017 at Quarry Hill, Camden, ME. She was predeceased by her husband, Curtis D. Chase, Jr. and step-son Curtis H. Chase. Hope moved to South Hope, Maine in 1980 working first at Pen Bay Hospital as a Registered Central Service Technician then changed jobs becoming a jeweler’s assistant for Ronna Lugosch. When Ronna moved from Camden, Hope took up stained glass and antique porcelain & composition doll repair. Crafts were her passion; however, she worked part-time as an aide at Talbot House in Rockland, until she could no longer handle the stairs. She was known in the antique doll world, as the doll lady of South Hope. Hope graduated Bridgewater (Mass.) High School in 1946 and worked as an early switch board toll call operator for “Ma Bell”, she also was a proof reader for a printing company in Brockton, Massachusetts. In New Hampshire, she worked at Dartmouth Medical Center as a research assistant in the microbiology department, until the grant she was hired under expired. Hope leaves her daughter Cynthia S. & husband, James, DellaPenna, of Hope and Raleigh, NC; her son Peter D. & wife, Robin, Chase of Belmont, NH; daughter Mary F. Chase of Sanford, ME; and son James M. Chase of Manchester, NH. She also leaves her step-daughter Jean M. Durand of Canton, MA and children; 6 grand-children Miguel & wife, Nilda, DellaPenna of Sanford, FL; Christopher Chase of ME; Courtney Chase of New York; Kelley Fair of Revere, MA; Kattie Fair of Sanford, ME; Misty Chase of NH; and 5 great-grandchildren: Cindy E. DellaPenna; Leila Shahi; Hunter Fair; Starr and Vera Kenney. Hope’s sense of humor, creativeness and “let’s do it” attitude will be missed by all who knew her. Arrangements are with Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast, Maine. A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
